IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE!
In the deltas and
On the bayous
Everybody `gonna spread the news-
That golden, southern sunshine
`Gonna rest gently on your brow
`Gonna ride the rails
And someday you `gonna make it somehow
Times is hard and times is lean
But what keeps you goin' is your dream
When a man can earn a dollar
For a dollar's worth of work
Honeysuckle breezes
And lazy afternoons
Hobo stew and butter-cakes
And a southern cajun tune
You try your best to be a man
And not to be a fool
but sometimes folks can be so mean
And some just downright cruel
So you move on to another town-
Down the road apiece
Searchin' for the holy grail or a golden fleece
On a fourth of july picnic
You was singled out-
"That man's just a bum"!, you heard someone shout
So they hauled you off to jail
Like so many times before
Tonight your only friend will be
A cold and lonely floor
Once you had a family
And a business of your own
But now you search the city dumps
Like a dog without a bone
Your friends and relations, they have all passed you by
You're so cold and lonely that you wish that you would die
But somethin' keeps you goin'
When you remember well
The day the preacher told you
That you weren't meant for hell
So you search for Heaven
On the backroads and the byways
You'll bunk down under the stars
And under the moon's gaze
You're a freewheelin' hobo
'Live life without a care
You've only to look over your shoulder to see
That it's a jungle out there!
